Comparative Study of Hierarchical, CODASYL and Relational Database
Abstract
Over the years of database management practices, there is a need for users to know the various models of the database system, their features and characteristics, similarities and dissimilarities, and advantages and disadvantages. The knowledge of these acquaints the users with guidelines in making relevant choices and consequent adoption of the database system that would suit their data management and operations. Consequently, this work has been devoted to x-ray what Hierarchical, CODASYL and Relational databases are coupled with how they came to be, that is, their brief background history. With the explanatory methodology of research used for this study, it is noted that the schematic model of each of the three databases defines the concepts and reasons for the database which is a guide in the choice of the data model in database design. The features and characteristics of each of the three help us to draw the similarities and dissimilarities, advantages and disadvantages or drawbacks. The knowledge put together plays a vital role in decision-making when using the application hence the comparative study for the three database systems.
